Starting a skincare brand is exciting, but the first big decision is often the most confusing: should you go OEM or ODM?
Here's the difference in plain English.
OEM – You Bring the Recipe
- You already have a formula. Maybe you worked with a chemist, bought a base from a supplier, or developed it yourself. The factory just produces it for you – no questions, no changes.
- You own the formula completely.
- You control every ingredient.
- You're responsible for stability and safety testing.
Best for: brands with R&D experience, or those who want full control over their product DNA.
ODM – You Bring the Vision
- You have an idea – "I want a retinol serum in a heart‑shaped softgel capsules" – and the factory does the rest. They formulate, test, and produce.
- The factory does the heavy lifting.
- You focus on branding and marketing.
- Formula ownership usually stays with the factory (unless you negotiate exclusivity).
Best for: new brands, fast launches, or founders who aren't chemists.
Which One Should You Choose?
Ask yourself three questions:
- Do I have a finished, tested formula? → If yes, OEM.
- Do I want to launch in months, not years? → ODM is faster.
- Do I care about owning the formula IP? → If yes, OEM – but expect higher upfront costs.
Most founders start with ODM to test the market, then switch to OEM once they have volume and want to differentiate.
