The Traditional View
Traditional use of ginger for hair is rooted in its warming, circulation-boosting properties. Ginger contains compounds like gingerol and shogaol that create a sensation of warmth when applied to the skin. The theory goes that this stimulates local blood circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles. Traditional practitioners have long used ginger for conditions ranging from dandruff to alopecia areata (patchy hair loss).
What the Science Actually Shows
The 6-Gingerol Problem
The most well-known compound in ginger is 6-gingerol, which makes up over 75% of ginger's bioactive components. A landmark 2013 study from Southern Medical University in China found that 6-gingerol does the opposite of what traditional use suggests – it actually suppresses hair growth. The compound inhibits the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells (the cells that control hair follicle activity) and can induce apoptosis (cell death) in these cells. Some researchers have even suggested 6-gingerol could be developed as a hair removal agent rather than a hair growth stimulant.
Two Conflicting Pathways
This creates a paradox. Ginger contains compounds that:
- Stimulate circulation – gingerol and related compounds dilate blood vessels and increase skin temperature, improving local microcirculation
- Suppress follicle cells – 6-gingerol directly inhibits the cells needed for hair growth
Which effect dominates depends on concentration, formulation, and individual response.
The Cedrol Alternative
Newer research has identified cedrol, a sesquiterpene found in ginger, as a compound with genuine hair growth potential. A 2024 study published in Bioorganic Chemistry found that cedrol can activate the Wnt3α/β-catenin signalling pathway – a key driver of hair follicle regeneration. It also has antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties that help hair follicle cells withstand stress. However, this research is still early-stage and primarily conducted on mice.
What Ginger Can Realistically Do for Scalp Health
- Despite the controversy around hair growth, ginger does offer genuine benefits for scalp health:
- Anti-inflammatory effects – Ginger compounds can help reduce scalp inflammation, which is a contributing factor in many forms of hair loss.
- Antioxidant protection – Ginger helps neutralise oxidative stress in hair follicles.
- Improved circulation – The warming effect of ginger can temporarily increase blood flow to the scalp, potentially improving nutrient delivery.
- Antimicrobial properties – Ginger has natural antibacterial and antifungal activity, which may help with dandruff and scalp infections.
The Risks
- Ginger is a strong skin irritant. Applying it directly can cause:
- Contact dermatitis and allergic reactions
- Physical damage to the scalp barrier from rough ginger fibres
- Worsening of seborrheic dermatitis (oily, inflamed scalp conditions)
